What are the main causes of bone loss?

The causes of alveolar bone loss both in terms of height and width are several:

  • loss of one or more teeth due to trauma1;
  • bone atrophy established after extraction of one or more teeth or after prolonged use of mobile prostheses2;
  • inflammatory and degenerative diseases of gingival tissues and support apparatus of the tooth, due to bacteria, responsible for dental plaque and tartar (periodontitis)3.

To obviate these frequent problems and guarantee the stability both of natural teeth and eventual dental implants, it is necessary to increase the volume of alveolar bone.

What are the main causes of bone reconstruction?

  1. Placement of dental implants

    The alveolar bone has insufficient dimensions to allow safe anchorage of implants.

  2. Periodontal disease

    Teeth progressively lose the anchorage to alveolar bone due to bacterial infection, responsible for the destruction of bone and periodontal ligament tissues.

  3. Wide dimension bone damage

    Trauma or degenerative pathologies (tumors) may destroy maxillofacial anatomical parts that will need partial or total reconstruction.

  4. Pneumatization of the maxillary sinus

    The rehabilitation of the wide loss of bone in the posterior region of the maxilla may be necessary to assure safe anchorage of dental implants.
