PHYSICOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF BIOMATERIALS COMMONLY USED IN DENTISTRY AS BONE SUBSTITUTES - COMPARISON WITH HUMAN BONE*

A group of researchers of the University of Coimbra has published an article that compares several biomaterials commonly available on the market, trough a set of physical and chemical tests and related parameters.

The materials compared included OsteoBiol® Gen-Os, anorganic bovine cancellous bone, anorganic bovine cortical bone with P-15 aminoacid sequence and aragonite.

On four parameters (real density, mineral content, FTIR infrared spectroscopy and XRD diffractograms) OsteoBiol® Gen-Os has shown the highest similarity to human bone, probably due to its dual-phase bone matrix composition (mineral phase and collagen phase). Furthermore Gen-Os porosity has been measured and its value is approximately 50% compared to anorganic bovine cancellous bone. This observation can be explained by the different temperatures of treatment of the two materials: higher temperatures increase porosity, while lower temperatures allow collagen preservation and result in lower porosity of the particles. Such differences in phase composition and chemical characteristics are expected to influence the clinical performance of these materials.

HETEROLOGOUS CORTICO-CANCELLOUS COLLAGENATED
PRE-HYDRATED BONE MIX

ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING IN MAXILLARY SINUS LIFT

OsteoBiol® mp3 is a mix of pre-hydrated collagenated cortico-cancellous porcine bone (PCPB).

The unique Tecnoss® manufacturing process guarantees the preservation of the original collagenic matrix within the bone substitute and prevents ceramisation of the granules allowing a gradual biomaterial resorption rate(1) and an extraordinary new bone formation area of 43.9%(2).
